MUTUAL SHARING EXPERIENCE

Today's meeting and workshop has the one important point. Students from Open Science Schooling project are going to share their experience and knowledge with younger ones just approaching and getting into a new project Young Students as Critical Science Detectives.

For this reason students will guide younger mates
to dive into technology and story telling.

OPEN SCIENCE SCHOOLING 2017-2020

Plan for the meeting today:
1. Start working on preparing the final poster (A1 size) answering for the question why such research on moths is done? What are the advantages? In what aspect the collected data can be used?

2. Prepare a layout for the moth pest including a picture, maps and text. Than make a list of moth species which are pests

3. Guide your younger mates to create a personal web page. Than paste on the web page first post with the poster of the meeting.

YOUNG STUDENTS AS CRITICAL SCIENCE DETECTIVES 2019-2021

PLAN FOR MONTHS

Make the groups and make a plan for each of these three topics.

1. Does the local sewage plant work properly? Make a poster with water investigation tested during the Festival of Science and Art in Siedlce.

Take part in laboratory on Phosphorous Sedimentation during Biologists Night in Warsaw. Then make a poster from the experiment provided.

2. Calculate the Carbon Fingerprint for Łuków and its inhabitants. What possibility we have to change the source of energy in Łuków form based on fossil fuels to renewable ones?

3. How much waste do we produce? How much waste do we recycle, reuse and how much can be reduced? What happens next with the waste? What is the policy and practice for our local waste management and so sustainable development?

FAMILY BASED OPEN SCIENCE SCHOOLING

  2. Activities regarding sewage treatment plants.

1.We will go to the treatment plant and check how the water purification process works.

2.We will interview the employees and draw a conclusion.

3.We will talk to passers-by and ask about their opinion on the sewage treatment plant in Łuków.

4.We will summarize all results and opinions and determine whether the operation of the sewage treatment plant is good.

5.We will check statistics from previous years and compare them with the latest ones.

  3. - Combustion of fuels is the basic human activity causing air pollution.
    - Usually coal of lower grade is chosen, but cheaper, but this does not necessarily translate into savings. Poor quality coal has a lower calorific value (ie the amount of energy contained in the fuel), which means that it needs to be burned more.
    - Waste incineration, the most dangerous toxic compounds are formed during the waste incineration. Substances released during the combustion of plastics are much more harmful than those released during the combustion of any other fuel, even of inferior quality.
    - The annual CO2 production is 175 million tons.

The possibility of replacing coal in several ways are:
    - nuclear power plant
    - hydrogen power plant
    - wind power plant
    - water electronics

Coal accounts for around 80 in heat and electricity,
gas, renewable and nuclear provides about 20%

The main reasons for the formation of low emissions associated with heat production are:
    - Inappropriate fuel burning.
    - Low quality fuel (coal) combustion.
    - Burning of rubbish.
    - Transport of persons and goods.
    - Climate and geographical conditions.
    - Latitude.
    - Climate, shape and spatial orientation of the relief.
    - Bad layout of the urban space.
